As part of Mayor Bowser’s Vision Zero program to improve transportation safety, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is considering options for adding protected bike lanes on New Mexico Avenue/Tunlaw Road/37th Street through ANC 3B.
DDOT wants to install protected bike lanes in 2022 as part of a larger 72-mile protected bike lane network. The bike lanes would connect AU and Georgetown, allow children to bike to school, and let bicyclists of all ages use the corridor safely.
At ANC3B’s January 21st meeting, DDOT presented two design proposals:
- separated bike lanes, one on each side of the street
- a two-way protected bike lane on one side of the street
DDOT estimates that either option would remove up to 187 parking spaces in ANC 3B, including all 96 parking spaces on Tunlaw Road south of Calvert and on 37th Street from Tunlaw to Whitehaven Parkway.
In response, ANC 3B sent DDOT a list of questions and community interests, including safety at intersections and the effect of the proposed bike lanes on bus service, deliveries, pedestrians, and parking.
