Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority (WMATA) on the Annunciation System for METRO Busses
Herb Leonard, Phil Wallace and David Eron from WMATA were joined by Doug Stallsworth, Department of Public Works – Mass Transit Division, John Collins, General Contractor – Clever Devices – manufacturers of the Annunciation System; and Richard Gilbert, Senior Service Supervisor.
Mr. Wallace explained that in 1989 the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) required final destination announcement for patrons entering and exiting buses. In 1996, ADA was amended to allow automated announcement systems. In 1997, WMATA contracted with Clever Devices to install Automated Annunciation Systems in all new buses.
Mr. Collins explained that the system is designed to shut down on any routes that start after 8:00pm and will not start up until after a route starts after 8:00 am. The system is designed to raise the volume .5 decibels above outside ambient noise.
The audience and Commissioners attended a demonstration outside.
A on site visit for Glover Park was arranged for July 17th to address specific neighborhood locations.
